September 18, 1980 - March 18, 2022
Andrew Joseph Vollmar, 41, husband to Elizabeth Vollmar, and father to Rose Vollmar, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on March 18, 2022. Andrew was born in St. Louis, MO on September 18, 1980, to Jeffery and Margaret Vollmar, but spent his entire life in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School (grades 1-8), then on to Christian Brothers High School where he graduated in 1998. While at CBHS, he was a stellar student and athlete, earning varsity letters in football and wrestling (as a freshman). There, he developed strong friendships that lasted the rest of his life. He was proud to call himself a “Brothers Boy.” He often grumbled that he missed having “perfect attendance” for all four years in high school because on a single occasion his mother forced him to go to the doctor, where it was determined he had a dislocated shoulder from wrestling practice. Andrew earned his bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the University of Memphis (Magna Cum Laude) and was a fierce Memphis Tigers fan. His professional career spanned the most prestigious companies in the world, Comcast, then to Medtronic, and finally to his dream job as a manager in the Information Security division at FEDEX. Andrew was large in stature and larger in life. His infectious personality had an amazing way of making everyone around him feel good. His smile was contagious, his story telling detailed, his patience was amazing, and his memory was very, very keen. He had such an easygoing style about everything he did. He never worried too much about anything. It was as if he knew that somehow, everything would be OK. In high school, like most students he had a curfew. He was never late, although he often walked through the door with a minute to spare. That carried over to his adult life. Andrew was always on time! In many ways Andrew was a renaissance man. He had a natural style about him that allowed him to excel at about anything he did. All things relating to internet and networking were a breeze, he followed Memphis Tigers football and basketball with a passion, he was not a cook, he was a chef and could talk about more styles of food preparation than we’ve heard on Food Network. He was a diehard Chicago Bears fan in a family full of Green Bay Packers fans but had to wear Packers gear when he went to Super Bowl XXXI. He was just beginning to learn to play the banjo. And he was a loving member of our very large, extended family who will be greatly missed. Andrew found the love of his life when he met and married Elizabeth, whom he had known since high school. He loved his daughter Rose with all his heart and bragged about her achievements daily. Andrew was a loving son, who actually called his mother every single day just to see how she was doing. Andrew was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; Jim and Carol Vollmar, maternal grandparents; Tommy and Louise Cotter, aunts; Jean Marie (Cotter) Bivens, Mary Bena (Cotter) Gallina, Christine Lee (Cotter) Gray, and Uncle Bill Vollmar. Andrew is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Vollmar, daughter, Rose Vollmar, parents, Jeffery and Margaret Vollmar, brother, Tommy Vollmar (Lenore), sister Mary Margaret Vollmar, nephews James and Colin Vollmar, in-laws David Lee (Sharon), brother in law Jonathan Lee (Dani), aunts Patricia Gibbons, Linda Bonkofsky and Debbie Vollmar, uncles Max Gray, Hunt Gallina and Fred Bonkofsky, and 12 cousins; Emily Lawrence, Lee Ann Lawrence, Mary Everett Woodard, Christina Bonkofsky, Lenzi Costa, Sarah Golden, Bridget Carrett, Andrea Hora, Alex Daley, Luke Daley, Christopher Vollmar, and Megan Vollmar. Services will be held on Wednesday, March 30 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 4851 Park Avenue, Memphis, TN 38117. The family will welcome guests at 10:00AM. Mass will be held at 11:00AM, followed by a reception in the Family Life room. The family requests that memorials be made to Christian Brothers High School, 5900 Walnut Grove Rd, Memphis, TN 38120, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105.
